Sice nebyl nejsvítější z obyvatel vesnice, ale jeho srdečnost a dobrá povaha ho dělaly oblíbeným. Jednoho dne se zamiloval do krásné mladé ženy jménem Marie a rozhodl se ji požádat o ruku. Hned v začátcích manželství začala Marie zneužívat Karelův důvěřivý charakter, žádala ho o pořád víc a víc. Ostatní vesničané sledovali s obavami situaci, Mariina manipulace s Karlem se stupňovala až do doby, kdy se Karel rozhodl odejít na cestu za tím, co udělá jeho ženu šťastnou.

Během své cesty se Karel setkal s čarodějnicí v lese, která mu slíbila splnění všech jeho přání výměnou za jeho duši.
